Privacy Policy
This explains what information Chewsr collects, why, who it’s shared with, and the choices you have. We’ve tried to keep it plain. If anything’s unclear, email support@chewsr.app.
Who we are
Chewsr is a trading name of KR Labs Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17526138, registered office 2 Elverston Close, Laindon, Basildon, England, SS15 5TY). KR Labs Ltd is the “controller” of your personal information, which means we decide how it’s used and we’re responsible for protecting it. Contact us at support@chewsr.app.
What we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your email address and password (stored securely as a hash, never in plain text), or the ID that Apple or Google gives us if you sign in with them. If you use Sign in with Apple and hide your email, we only see Apple’s relay address.
- Profile: your first name, username and, if you add them, a profile photo and short bio.
- Confirmations: that you’re 18 or over, and when you agreed to these terms and our community rules.
- Your couple: the partner you link with, your couple code and your couple settings (such as shared preferences).
- Preferences: the kinds of dates you like, cuisines, activities, budget and how far you’ll travel.
- Swipes, matches and plans: which places you like, pass on or save, your matches, and any date details you add (date, time, party size, notes and ratings).
- Scrapbook: the pages you and your partner add after a date: the photos, the title and date you give each page, your notes and your rating. If you share a page to Social, we also record the caption you add, reactions, who follows whom, places you save from Social, and any reports or blocks.
- Subscriptions: if you buy Chewsr Plus, which plan you have, when it started, renews or ends, and whether it’s a free trial. Apple takes the payment, so we never see your card or bank details.
- Messages to us: anything you send to our support or info email addresses, and feedback you send from the app (with your app version and phone type, so we can look into it).
Information collected when you use Chewsr
- Location: only while the app is open, and only if you allow it. See Your location.
- Notifications: if you allow them, a push notification token for your phone and your notification settings.
- App usage (only if you say yes): what you do in the app (for example screens viewed, swipes and matches, and steps completed), your app version, phone model and operating system, and your time zone. We use this to understand what works and fix what doesn’t. The app asks you first, and you can change your answer any time in Account → Share usage data.
- Technical data: like any online service, our servers log things such as IP addresses and error messages to keep Chewsr running and secure.
- Crash reports: if the app crashes or hits an unexpected error, it sends a crash report: what went wrong in the code, your app version, phone model and operating system, and your Chewsr account ID. Crash reports never include your name, email, photos, messages or location.
We don’t collect your contacts, your precise location in the background, or anything from other apps.
Your location
Chewsr suggests real places near you, so it needs to know roughly where you are. When the app is open, your phone sends your location to our servers to decide which area to build your deck from. We don’t store your exact location. We keep only the map area your deck came from (squares of about 5 km) and the places in it. If you share a scrapbook page to Social, we save an approximate location with it (rounded to roughly 10 km) so couples nearby can see it. You can turn location off at any time in your phone’s settings; Chewsr won’t be able to find places near you while it’s off.
How we use your information, and why we’re allowed to
UK data protection law requires us to have a reason (a “lawful basis”) for each use of your information.
| What we do | Lawful basis |
|---|---|
| Create and run your account, build your daily deck, link you with your partner, find matches, show your scrapbook | Contract: we need it to provide Chewsr to you |
| Use your device location to find places near you; send push notifications; access photos you choose to post | Consent, given through your phone’s permission settings. You can withdraw it at any time. |
| Keep Chewsr safe: confirm you’re 18+, review reports, remove content that breaks the rules, block abuse, prevent fraud and misuse | Legitimate interests (keeping users safe) and contract |
| Understand how Chewsr is used so we can improve it (app usage analytics) | Consent, asked in the app. Turn it off any time in Account → Share usage data. |
| Keep Chewsr secure and working (server logs, error reports and app crash reports) | Legitimate interests (running a safe, reliable service) |
| Sell and run subscriptions: switch on Chewsr Plus for you and your linked partner, handle free trials, renewals, cancellations and restored purchases | Contract |
| Send emails you need, such as sign-in codes, password resets and important changes | Contract |
| Keep records we’re legally required to, and respond to legal requests | Legal obligation |
We don’t sell your personal information, we don’t use it for third-party advertising, and we don’t make decisions about you based solely on automated processing that have legal or similarly significant effects. Your deck is ordered automatically from your preferences and your partner’s likes, which is just how the app works.
What your partner and other people see
- Your partner sees your name, username and photo, your date preferences, your matches and plans, and your shared scrapbook (photos, notes and ratings on every page). They never see the places you passed on, or the places you liked that they didn’t.
- Other Chewsr users can’t see your scrapbook unless you share a page to Social. Then couples who follow you and couples nearby see that page’s photos, title, date, rating and caption, plus your names and usernames. Your profile shows your shared pages and how many people follow you (not who). Your notes are never shown. Either of you can remove a shared page at any time.
- Finding each other: other Chewsr users can search for you by your username or name to follow you. Search shows your names, usernames, profile photo and follower count, never your scrapbook. People you block, or who block you, can’t find you.
- Sharing outside Chewsr: if you share one of your pages to Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp or anywhere else, or save it to your Photos, the image is made on your phone and goes only where you send it. It includes the page’s photos, title, date, area and rating, but never your notes. We don’t receive a copy, and what happens to it after that is up to you and the app you share it to. Saving to Photos asks for permission to add images only; Chewsr can’t see the rest of your photo library.
- If one of you pays for Chewsr Plus, it covers you both, and the app shows the other partner whose subscription it is (for example “Plus – with Sam”). Neither of you sees the other’s payment details.
- If you unlink from a partner, they keep access to matches and scrapbook pages from while you were linked unless you delete those pages.
Who we share it with
We use trusted service providers to run Chewsr. They only use your information to provide their service to us, under contracts that require them to protect it.
- Supabase: our database, sign-in and photo storage (hosted in London, UK).
- Google: place details, photos, ratings and opening hours come from Google Maps Platform. Our servers ask Google about places and areas; we don’t send Google your name, email or account details. If you choose Google sign-in, Google also handles that. See Google’s Privacy Policy.
- Apple: Sign in with Apple (if you use it), push notifications, and subscriptions bought through the App Store (Apple takes the payment). See Apple’s Privacy Policy.
- RevenueCat: manages subscriptions for us. It receives your Chewsr account ID and your App Store purchase records so it can tell us which plan you have; it doesn’t get your name, email or payment details. See RevenueCat’s Privacy Policy.
- Expo: delivers push notifications to your phone.
- PostHog: app analytics, only if you agree (hosted in the EU). It sees your Chewsr username, so we can look into problems you report, but never your email address, real name, photos or notes.
- Sentry: app crash reports, so we can fix bugs (hosted in the EU).
- Resend: sends our emails (EU region).
- Google Workspace: our email inboxes, if you contact us.
- Netlify: hosts our website.
We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect someone’s safety, or as part of a sale or restructuring of our business (in which case this policy would continue to protect your information).
Booking links: if you tap “Book a table”, you leave Chewsr for the booking provider’s website, which has its own privacy policy. Some of these links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission; we don’t share your personal information with the provider.
Where your information is stored
Our main database and photo storage are in the UK. Some providers (such as Google, Apple, RevenueCat, Expo and Netlify) may process information in the United States or elsewhere. When information leaves the UK, it’s protected by the safeguards UK law requires, such as the UK–US data bridge or the UK’s approved contract clauses.
How long we keep it
- Your account and everything in it are kept until you delete your account. You can do that any time in Account → Delete account. Deleting removes your profile, preferences, swipes, matches, plans, scrapbook pages and photos from Chewsr straight away. Copies in our backups are overwritten within 30 days.
- Each day’s deck (the cards you were shown) is cleared out automatically a few days after it expires; your likes and matches stay until you delete your account.
- Reports and safety records may be kept for up to 12 months after an issue is closed, so we can deal with repeat abuse.
- Analytics are kept for up to 24 months, then deleted.
- Crash reports are kept for up to 90 days, then deleted.
- Purchase records (which plan, when it was bought, renewed or ended) may be kept for up to 6 years after the purchase, because tax and accounting law requires it. After you delete your account they’re no longer linked to your profile.
- Emails with us are kept for as long as needed to help you, and normally no longer than 2 years.
Your rights and choices
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of your personal information;
- correct anything that’s wrong (you can edit most things yourself in the app);
- delete your information (or delete your account in the app);
- restrict or object to how we use it, including our use of analytics;
- send your information to you or another service in a common format.
Email support@chewsr.app from the address on your account. We’ll reply within one month. You can also turn off location, notifications and photo access in your phone’s settings at any time.
If you’re unhappy with how we’ve handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint.
Our website and beta waitlist
If you join the waitlist on chewsr.app, we keep your email address, the date you joined and where you found us (for example Instagram or TikTok). We use it only to email you about the Chewsr beta and launch, because you asked us to. Every email has a way to unsubscribe, or reply “remove me”. We keep waitlist emails until the app launches publicly or until you ask us to remove yours. Our website doesn’t use advertising or tracking cookies.
Age
Chewsr is for people aged 18 and over. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you think someone under 18 is using Chewsr, tell us at support@chewsr.app and we’ll remove their account.
Changes to this policy
If we make important changes, we’ll tell you in the app or by email before they take effect. The date at the top shows when this policy was last updated.
